"Art must be propagated ceaselessly." (Beethoven)

The Journal of a Musician

A NEW QUARTERLY   MAGAZINE
published in Chicago for an international audience
available in print by subscription

The Journal of a Musician believes in the power of great music and great art to appeal to
people of all backgrounds. It is designed to be read by curious people, musicians or not, who
are interested in the arts and culture. Although our main focus is classical music, we believe in
being open and involved with the whole of life. To that end we include extra-musical topics
that share similar sources of inspiration and creativity: other forms of music (jazz, rock, pop,
world music) and art (painting, sculpture, architecture, fashion, design, haute-cuisine, etc.).
Combining all of these form the basis for “l’art de vivre,” the art of living, a constant
celebration of people and life!

WHO WE ARE : George Lepauw, founder and editor, is a French-American pianist who was
most recently heard performing live on Chicago’s 98.7 WFMT radio FAZIOLI SALON
SERIES program in June 2007. In addition to George, editors and writers from the United
States, Europe and Asia contribute to the creation of this international magazine.

Excerpts
from
The Journal of a Musician:

-“The reasons behind the creation of this magazine are multiple but driven above all by my love of music
and life. I see music as a reflection of life and I hear life through music.”
From the first editorial by George Lepauw

-“As a diplomat, I cannot agree more with George Lepauw’s assertion that ‘music is a unifying principle in
the world and has no real boundaries.’”
Consul General of France in Chicago, Jean-Baptiste Main de Boissière

-“For musicians it’s very strange to find a home. After traveling for so many years, I feel that my home is
where I can make music. And yet when I am touring, I miss my home in New York, but if I am at home, I want
to go and play. It’s kind of a restless circle.”
Interview for The Journal of a Musician with Grammy-winning pianist, Yefim Bronfman

-“All the creative arts inspire me. And I like doing creative things myself, including languages which are a
communicative art. Being international is part of being a musician, and I enjoy talking to people who are not
doing what I do exactly, but who are creating things, always coming up with new ideas, trying to express
themselves in a way that’s true to themselves.”
Interview for The Journal of a Musician with Grammy-winning violin sensation Hilary Hahn

From interviews for The Journal of a Musician about the late cellist Mstislav Rostropovich :

-“Our conversations were always too short! But he was so warm. One always had a feeling of exaltation and
of a passionate being. In fact, he always had passion and that’s what he wanted to communicate, not only
musically, but in anything.”
Composer Henri Dutilleux

-“With me he never, never talked about technique. He would only talk about the music and what was
required of me to play it well. My lessons were just always about the composer, about the music and they
were full of metaphors, stories, good humor, and encouragements to give more and to be a bigger
musician.”
Cellist in the grammy-winning Emerson Quartet, David Finckel

-“His letter to the editors of the major newspapers in the Soviet Union defending Solzhenitsyn in 1970 was
amazing. It was quite dangerous at the time, and I remember how powerful it sounded and how incredibly
courageous it was on his part to take this stance openly! It was an incredible encouragement to everybody,
realizing that there was a way even in this totalitarian system to hope that freedom, any kind of freedom,
might prevail at the end.”
Internationally known Cellist, and chamber music partner of pianist Martha Argerich,  Mischa Maisky

-“All that was food for the soul and for the senses, Slava [Rostropovich] enjoyed. It could just as well have
been foie gras or a potato with an excellent French butter!”
